Sorry for the delay; Tim has been having some serious family problems.

The offices in a lodge can be referred to as 'chairs'. A Mason willing to become involved in the management of his lodge 'works' or 'moves through the chairs'. It simply means progressing through the offices.

The beginning one would vary between jurisdictions, but the highest office in a lodge is that of the Master, akin to the president of a club or other social body.
