Freemasons are in one sense quite diverse as we are of all races, religions, ages and occupations. On the other hand, we all believe that it is possible to improve oneself. Call us a support group for men who want to be better individuals - better in the sense of more moral, more generous, better citizens of the world. We do that through the study of symbolism and allegory.
That takes time and the effect is quite subtle. Quicker is the social aspect, a chance to meet wth like-minded men.
As to how to find out, you have made a good start.

What do Freemasons do? by: Fred
Freemasons are members of a fraternity. No matter how many times we say it, people seem not to understand that. As a group, we have no specific religious beliefs, as those are left to each member. We DO believe in "making good men better." That's what we do, or what we arrive to do. Our "work" is the betterment of ourselves, our brothers, families, and mankind. The structures we make are no longer made of stone, but of flesh and blood, as the Mason becomes the structure. I know it all sounds lofty and esoteric, but that's how it is. As far as finding out.....the best way is to ask a mason, but I curious, why do you want to know? What purpose do you have fotbtye information? Although our meetings are usually pretty dull, being basic business meetings, with the occasional presentation or lecture, they are still private, and held behind closed doors. It's simple, "To be one, ask one." If you want to learn, go to your local Masonic Lodge and ASK.
