We are members of a fraternity, and like most fraternities, we are a society with secrets. Passwords, certain phrases, are used to identify members. The secret information is information that identifies us to each other. We are NOT a religion. Our buildings are c alled temples, since they are all supposed to represent the Temple of King Solomon.

Thanks for asking by: Lant
I would add to Fred's response that we have in reality very few true secrets. About the only real ones are methods of recognizing other Masons. A Freemason can coint on a warm welcome anywhere in the world; there are people who would abuse such trust and we thus reserve such proof of identity to ourselves.
Another area with a bit of secrecy are our ceremonies, which are proven teaching tools to pass on our philosophies. While there is nothing particularly surprising in them, they would not be nearly as effective if a candidate walked in knowing them, so we don't discuss or publicize them, either.
As to us being a secret society, how many secret societies would be hosting this public debate on a public website?
