Masonic News & Views - The MMRL
June 09, 2014

As you may recall, my wife, the lovely Lady BG, has been having some health issues this year. In our latest chapter she is scheduled for another surgery early next month. This surgery will take a few hours to perform, and so in preparation for the procedure the surgeon required her to undergo an Electrocardiogram of her heart function in an effort to insure there were no lurking complications. They did the ECG test three times, and apparently weren't happy with any of them because they then sent us up the hall to the cardiopulmonary lab for more tests. To make a long story short, everyone in Oregon who owns or has access to a stethoscope has listened to the Lady BG's heart this week. Fortunately, her heart is big enough to accomodate them all and she's handling everything with her usual grace and good humor. We don't have any news yet, but we're praying that it will be good news and would be appreciative if you should feel moved to do the same.

All this is to explain why I was researching heart disease recently, and how I happened upon the Cardiac Research Institute at the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory. Did you know that as a part of the Masonic family, or someone who loves and encourages a Freemason, you are helping to support an internationally recognized and respected pioneering institute in the field of cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmias? Yeah, me neither.

And these scientists are doing some amazing things. From molecular biology and genetics to stem cell research, from cardiac arrhythmias to a bunch of stuff that I'll admit is over this old country boy's head. But still, it's fascinating to read about the work they're doing and think that, even if only in a small and indirect way, I'm helping to make that happen. And, so are you.

Check it out. It's pretty cool stuff. Here's the address for their Web site:

And here's the address for a short video about MMRL. It's mostly imformative, but there is a little plug for funding toward the end:

Just so you know, I nor Masonsmart receive any remuneration should you decide to make a donation to MMRL.

Hopefully, I'll have some good news to share next week regarding the Lady BG's ticker. Thanks for being there, and for letting me come to visit once in a while.

Fraternally yours,

Tim Couch
