Greetings Brother,

I received a couple of communications recently that gave me pause to ponder. One was from a Brother asking a seemingly simple question, "What do you get out of Masonry?" The other was from a Brother who is no longer active in the fraternity, and he was lamenting that he just never found what he was looking for in Masonry.

I puzzled for a few days over what we might have done to assist our lost Brother in finding what it was he was searching for, and all the while the question, "What do you get out of Masonry," tumbled around in the back of my mind. I'm like an old cow sometimes; I have to ruminate on a question or thought in order to fully digest it. Eventually though, it dawned on me. The response to both was the same.

Freemasonry uses symbolism to express and impress its teachings. Its teachings, in their most basic sense, are life lessons. So essentially, Freemasonry is a symbolic representation of life.

What I get in Masonry is a set of tools (teachings, philosophy, fraternity), and the freedom and opportunities to create what I choose Freemasonry to be for me. I enjoy many aspects of the Masonic experience but I have chosen as my primary purpose to make it a spiritual and educational journey. Another may find his primary purpose in the fraternal fellowship, while yet another may find his in charitable works. Each individual Mason determines his own primary purpose, or Masonic bliss, by the choices he makes and the path he takes. And, the absence of choosing a path and pursuing it is in itself a choice.

To find what you're looking for in Masonry, as in life, is like mining for gold. It's not enough to kick over a couple of rocks at the base of the mountain and declare there's nothing to be found. To obtain the rewards you must both climb and dig. And, you can never know when the next swing of the pick might reveal the rich vein you're searching for. You may give up the search, but that doesn't mean the gold wasn't there.

Unlike mining for gold, however, Masonry is not a solitary endeavor. There are no claim jumpers where the riches consist of knowledge and truth. Every Mason who has gone before you along your chosen path will gladly share their riches with you, as you will with those to follow. You have but to ask, and to listen, and to consider, and to learn. But, you can not expect everyone to have the knowledge that you seek. You simply have to keep asking until you find the one who does.

So the real question in Masonry, as in Life, is not, "What do you get out of it," but instead, "What will you make of it?"

Fraternally yours,

Tim Couch

p.s. Thanks to you the Masonic News & Views is going out to 506 folks this week. That's just pretty darn cool. I can't thank you enough.
