Masonic News & Views -- Birdbrain at the CowChows
May 15, 2011
Over the last few weeks the CowChows has been visited by a strange being. He doesn't appear strange, at first. He looks like just a regular Robin, but he acts more like a Dodo bird.
Early one morning we heard a thump, followed by the rustle of wings and scratching noises at the window. Occasionally, a bird will mistake the reflected scene for clear sailing and fly headlong into the glass pane. Fortunately, most recover fairly quickly; they shake it off and go on their way. But, this morning it happened again, and then again. Finally, I went to the window to see what was going on.
A Robin was perched on the branch of the Maple tree just outside the window, and while I watched he once more hurled himself against the glass and then thrashed his wings against it while scratching at it with his claws. I opened the window, told him what a birdbrain he was, and shooed him away. But, a short while later and several times every day since we have heard the familiar thump followed by rustling wings and scratching claws.
We've tried several times to shoo him off, but he just turns up again. I've tried explaining the reality of reflective glass to him, but he just sits in the tree and looks at me until I close the window and then it's...thump, rustle, scratch.
After a while the sound of him attacking the window became so familiar that I hardly noticed it, until this morning when I noticed it had stopped. I stepped out onto the back porch and there he lay, crumpled in a heap below the window.
I went down the steps to get a closer look at this weird bird. I picked him up and gently folded his wings into place, and then I realized he was still breathing. He had apparently only knocked himself unconscious, rather than breaking his fool neck. I decided this was an opportunity for further research so I took him up onto the porch and slipped him inside the antique birdcage the Lady BG uses for decorative purposes only. And then I waited.
After a while he began to rouse and eventually he propped himself up on one wing and shook his head. "What happened," he asked groggily.
"You knocked yourself silly when you flew into that window," I told him.
"Really? What's a window," he asked as he pushed himself over and rested on his belly.
"Never mind," I said. "Now, you have got to tell me why you keep attacking the side of my house day after day."
He shifted and got his feet under him, and staggered only a little as he stood. He looked around and then said, "I don't know what you're talking about. Hey, why am I locked up in here?"
"I'll let you out as soon as you explain this fascination or compulsion you seem to have with attacking my window," I told him.
"What's it to you," he wanted to know.
"I just need to understand. Is it because you see your reflection and think you're defending your territory against an intruder? Or, do you think your reflection in the glass is a possible mate and you're trying to reach her? Or, do you think your reflection is another Robin trapped inside and you're trying to rescue her? Or, what? What is it that drives you day after day to attack that window? I need to know why!"
"Eh," he said, "the ladies think it's cool. Go figure." He looked around slyly and then added, "All I know is, it works. Ya know what I mean?" And then he winked.
I opened the cage door and watched him fly back up into the Maple tree.
